In partnership with ADA 25 Chicago and Chicago Artists Month, Project Onward presents When I Paint My Masterpiece, an exhibition and related programs that celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). With a gallery exhibition, live music and theatre, a panel discussion, and hands-on workshops, When I Paint My Masterpiece reveals the vibrant creativity at work in studio programs for artists with disabilities throughout the Chicagoland area. Partner organizations include Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, Esperanza Community Services, The Arts of Life, Envision Unlimited, The Artists of Thresholds Bridge South, Little City Center for the Arts, and We Are Lions. When I Paint My Masterpiece is supported by a grant from The Chicago Community Trust.

Thursday, October 15, 6 – 9 pm: VIP Reception and Showcase

Join us for an exclusive first look at the gallery exhibition When I Paint My Masterpiece, featuring artists from Project Onward, Esperanza Community Services, Envision Unlimited, Thresholds South, Little City Center for the Arts, and more. Enjoy live music by DHF Express and a preview performance of Project Onward’s theatrical collaboration with Tellin’ Tales Theatre. Sample menu items from Quick Service, coming soon to Bridgeport by the Owners of Antique Taco! Tickets available through Eventbrite: $20 general admission/$15 students, seniors.

Friday, October 16, 7 – 10 pm: Third Friday Open Studio

Project Onward hosts a public reception for the exhibition When I Paint My Masterpiece, with music by DHF Express and the Arts of Life Band. Presented in conjunction with Chicago Artists Month. Free and open to the public.

Saturday, October 17, 2 – 4 pm: Opportunity and Ethics: A Panel Discussion on Commerce for Artists with Developmental Disabilities and Mental Illness

Presented in partnership with Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, this panel discussion addresses new trends toward entrepreneurship and self-sustaining business models among progressive art studios for individuals with disabilities. How do studios remain true to their missions, follow ethical commercial practices, and promote the work of artists who cannot always speak for themselves? These and other questions will be explored by the panelists. Presented in conjunction with Chicago Artists Month. Tickets available through Eventbrite: $10 general admission/$5 students, seniors.

Sunday, October 18, 1 – 4 pm: Paint Your Masterpiece!

Or sculpt, or weave, or collage it! Master artists from Project Onward and Envision Unlimited will help you unleash your creativity! Join us for demonstrations and hands-on activities suitable for all ages. Round out the afternoon with a special screening of Share My Kingdom (61 min), a film documenting the life and work of three artists at Little City Center for the Arts. Suggested donation: $5
